Gary Oldman Says the Next James Bond Has Already Been Chosen

The Oscar winner says producers have made their choice for 007 but have not announced it yet—and he is openly hoping the name is his Slow Horses co-star Jack Lowden.

James Bond casting rumors usually arrive wrapped in anonymous sources, betting odds and somebody’s uncle who supposedly knows a producer.

Gary Oldman just made the conversation much more interesting.

The Oscar-winning actor says the next 007 has already been chosen.

That does not mean the identity is public. It does not even mean Amazon MGM has confirmed Oldman’s claim. But when an actor of his stature casually says the decision has been made, Bond fans are going to listen.

Oldman Says the Choice Is Made

During an interview with Canada’s The Morning Show, Oldman discussed the long-running speculation surrounding his Slow Horses co-star Jack Lowden.

According to Variety, Oldman said producers have made their choice but have not announced it yet. He then made his own preference clear: he wants Lowden.

That is where the distinction becomes important.

Oldman did not say Jack Lowden has been cast as James Bond. He said a choice has been made and separately said he hopes that choice is Lowden.

Until Amazon MGM announces a name, anything beyond that is speculation.

The Official Search Has Been Underway for Months

Variety reported in May that Amazon MGM had begun auditioning actors for the role and brought in veteran casting director Nina Gold to help find Daniel Craig’s successor.

At the time, the studio said the search was underway but declined to discuss individual candidates.

Names repeatedly linked to the role have included Lowden, Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Harris Dickinson, among others.

The secrecy is not accidental. Bond casting has become its own entertainment franchise between Bond movies, generating years of speculation before a single frame is shot.

Jack Lowden Suddenly Has a Very Powerful Cheerleader

Lowden has built the kind of résumé that makes the rumor plausible without making it true.

His work opposite Oldman on Slow Horses has given him international visibility without turning him into a franchise actor whose identity is already locked to another blockbuster character.

That balance has historically mattered to Bond producers, who need an actor famous enough to carry the role but not so overexposed that audiences see another character every time he walks into frame.

Lowden’s wife, Saoirse Ronan, has even joked seriously about wanting to play a Bond villain, which means the couple already knows how to keep the rumor machine entertained.

The Clock Is Starting to Matter

Denis Villeneuve is set to direct the next Bond movie, with Steven Knight writing. Production is expected to move forward as the franchise enters its Amazon-controlled era.

That makes Oldman’s comment more believable on a practical level: at some point, the endless shortlist has to become one actor.

If Oldman is right, that moment has already happened behind closed doors.

Now Bond fans are waiting for the only thing that counts.

The name.
