Peter Cullen Dead at 85

Peter Cullen, the voice actor whose commanding performance transformed Optimus Prime into one of pop culture’s most recognizable heroes, has died.

He was 85.

Cullen died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, according to a statement from his family. His family said he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

For millions of viewers, however, Cullen was never simply a voice actor.

He was Optimus Prime.

The Voice That Defined Optimus Prime

Cullen began playing the heroic leader of the Autobots in the original Transformers television series in 1984.

The performance became so closely associated with the character that Cullen repeatedly returned to the role across television, animation, video games and Hollywood films.

He voiced Optimus in seven live-action Transformers movies released between 2007 and 2023, along with numerous franchise spinoffs.

The calm authority Cullen brought to the character became a defining feature of Optimus Prime.

And it came from somewhere deeply personal.

His Brother Inspired the Character

Cullen said his older brother Larry, a retired U.S. Marine Corps captain who served in Vietnam, influenced the way he approached the audition.

Instead of playing Optimus as an exaggerated action hero, Cullen remembered his brother’s advice to portray real strength with restraint.

The idea that strength could coexist with gentleness became inseparable from Cullen’s version of Optimus Prime and later appeared in the message his family shared after his death.

Cullen Was Also the Voice of Eeyore

Transformers may have made Cullen legendary, but it represented only one part of his enormous voice career.

He also spent years voicing Eeyore, the famously gloomy donkey from Disney’s Winnie the Pooh universe.

His other credits stretched into some unexpected corners of entertainment.

Cullen provided the voice of KARR, the sinister counterpart to KITT in Knight Rider. He also supplied memorable creature vocalizations in major Hollywood productions.

Before becoming a voice-acting institution, the Montreal-born performer worked in Canadian radio and television and appeared on programs including The Sonny & Cher Show and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

A Voice Generations Will Remember

Some performers are remembered for their faces.

Peter Cullen built an extraordinary legacy with sound.

Children who first heard Optimus Prime in the 1980s later brought their own children to Transformers movies featuring that same unmistakable voice.

That continuity turned Cullen into something rare: an actor who did not merely play an iconic character.

For generations of fans, he was the character.
