Taylor Swift has quietly stepped into the story of a Connecticut mother who nearly lost her life while trying to save teenagers after a highway accident.
The singer donated $50,000 to a GoFundMe supporting Ashley Taunton, a 42-year-old certified nursing assistant and mother of three recovering from catastrophic injuries.
Taunton was not involved in the original accident.
She stopped because she saw people in trouble.
That decision nearly killed her.
Ashley Taunton Stopped to Help Stranded Teenagers
Taunton was driving on Interstate 95 in Rhode Island in July with her youngest daughter when she saw a vehicle that had hydroplaned.
She pulled over and approached the damaged vehicle, where she encountered three teenagers.
They appeared shaken but largely okay.
Then another vehicle lost control on the wet roadway and came toward the group.
Taunton reacted immediately.
She pushed the teenager closest to her out of the vehicle’s path.
Taunton herself was struck.
Her Injuries Were Devastating
The impact left Taunton with multiple life-threatening injuries.
They included internal injuries, broken ribs and a ruptured diaphragm, among other serious trauma.
She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and faced what doctors expected could be a recovery lasting as long as a year.
In an extraordinary twist, Taunton later discovered the teenager she pushed to safety was the son of a longtime friend.
She had known his mother for years.
Neither family realized the connection when the accident happened.
Taylor Swift Found the Fundraiser
Taunton’s story began spreading as friends and supporters raised money to help her family through the long recovery.
Then an unusually large donation appeared.
$50,000 from Taylor Swift.
People confirmed that Swift made the contribution.
The donation immediately accelerated attention around the fundraiser.
But the size of the check is only part of why the story resonates.
Swift did not know Taunton personally.
She encountered the story of a stranger who risked her life for someone else and decided to help.
A Celebrity Story That Does Not Need Much Spin
Celebrity philanthropy can sometimes become complicated.
There are publicity campaigns, corporate partnerships and carefully produced announcements.
This one is much simpler.
A woman saw teenagers in danger.
She stopped.
She pushed one of them out of the way.
She nearly died.
Then one of the most famous people in the world learned what happened and contributed $50,000 toward helping her recover.
There is no scandal hiding underneath it.
No elaborate rollout.
Sometimes entertainment news can simply be about somebody doing something good.
