Anne Hathaway Joins Tom Cruise for Days of Thunder Comeback

Tom Cruise is officially taking Days of Thunder back onto the track—and this time Anne Hathaway is coming with him.

Hathaway will star opposite Cruise in Paramount Pictures’ long-awaited follow-up to the 1990 NASCAR drama, giving the movie an enormous second A-list name before cameras have even started rolling.

Cruise will reprise his role as racer Cole Trickle, while Hathaway will play a race-team owner and engineer, according to reports confirming the project Saturday. Paramount has already planted a flag on the calendar: the movie will open theatrically on June 2, 2028.

Tom Cruise Is Going Back to One of His Earliest Blockbusters

The original Days of Thunder, directed by Tony Scott and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, arrived in 1990 with Cruise already becoming one of Hollywood’s defining leading men.

The movie followed Cole Trickle as he entered the brutally competitive world of NASCAR racing.

It also famously paired Cruise with Nicole Kidman, whom he later married.

Nearly 40 years later, Cruise is returning to the character—but Paramount is clearly not treating the sequel merely as a nostalgia exercise.

The new movie will be shot for IMAX and receive a premium theatrical rollout that includes Dolby Cinema and 4DX.

Anne Hathaway Gets a Major Role

Hathaway’s casting may be the most interesting part of the announcement.

She is not simply being positioned as Cole Trickle’s romantic counterpart.

The Oscar winner will reportedly play a team owner and engineer, placing her directly inside the racing story.

That gives the sequel an opportunity to build a new power dynamic around Trickle instead of simply recreating the original movie.

Cruise and Hathaway also have never starred together before.

For two actors who have spent decades at the top of Hollywood, that alone gives Paramount a marketing event.

Cruise Is Betting on the Legacy-Sequel Formula Again

There is an obvious comparison hanging over the project:

Top Gun: Maverick.

Cruise returned to another character from the early stage of his career decades later and turned the result into a global phenomenon.

Maverick was not merely commercially successful. It demonstrated that audiences would embrace an older franchise if the new movie gave them enough spectacle, emotion and reason to care.

Now Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are testing whether some of that magic can be transferred from fighter jets to NASCAR.

Bruckheimer will produce the new film with Cruise and Tommy Harper. Jonathan Levine is directing from a screenplay by Will Staples.

Hollywood Has Another Major 2028 Movie

The announcement also shows just how far ahead studios are already positioning their biggest theatrical properties.

Cruise revealed Hathaway’s involvement from Daytona International Speedway ahead of NASCAR’s regular-season finale.

A promotional image showed the pair together beside a race car carrying the Days of Thunder branding.

The message was not subtle.

This is not simply an idea still floating around Hollywood.

Days of Thunder is coming back.

And with Cruise driving and Hathaway joining the team, Paramount has already turned a nearly 40-year-old movie into one of 2028’s most intriguing theatrical bets.
