Olivia Rodrigo did not think small for her first music festival.
She thought $20 million big.
Rodrigo’s inaugural Daisy Chain Fields took over Great Park in Irvine, California, Saturday with a sprawling women-led lineup, surprise collaborations and an ambitious charitable mission supporting organizations focused on women and girls.
By the time the event unfolded, the 23-year-old superstar had helped generate $20 million in support.
Rodrigo’s festival had raised enough for an initial $10 million donation to 10 nonprofit partners, while Melinda French Gates surprised the crowd with another $10 million pledge through Pivotal Ventures.
Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan Join Olivia
Then there was the music.
Rodrigo used her headlining set to bridge several generations of female songwriting.
She performed “Landslide” with Stevie Nicks, brought out Alanis Morissette for “Ironic,” and joined Sarah McLachlan for “Building a Mystery” and “Angel.”
The McLachlan appearance carried extra significance because Daisy Chain Fields was directly inspired by Lilith Fair, the groundbreaking women-led touring festival McLachlan helped create in the 1990s.
The lineup also included Chappell Roan, Doechii, Bikini Kill, Mitski, Garbage, The Breeders, Santigold and other women and female-fronted acts.
The Festival Had a Mission Beyond Music
Rodrigo did not hide the political and social purpose behind Daisy Chain Fields.
Net proceeds were directed toward organizations dealing with reproductive health, maternal health, domestic violence, legal rights and other issues affecting women.
Among the nonprofit beneficiaries were Planned Parenthood, the National Women’s Law Center and Black Mamas Matter Alliance.
The festival even included a “philanthropy village” where attendees could interact directly with participating organizations.
That made Daisy Chain Fields something more ambitious than simply another celebrity-curated festival.
Rodrigo used her audience as infrastructure.
A $10 Million Surprise Becomes $20 Million
Ahead of the event, Rodrigo announced that the festival had generated enough money to distribute $10 million among its nonprofit partners.
Then French Gates appeared as Rodrigo began her set.
Through Pivotal Ventures, she committed another $10 million.
Suddenly, Rodrigo’s debut festival had become a $20 million philanthropic event.
That is a remarkable opening statement for a festival that did not exist a year ago.
Olivia Rodrigo May Have Created Something Bigger Than a Concert
Celebrity-created festivals are not unusual.
What makes Daisy Chain Fields interesting is how carefully Rodrigo appears to have built an identity around it.
Women were not simply the headline attraction.
They were the artists, the nonprofit partners, the audience being mobilized and the historical inspiration behind the event.
Rodrigo also personally contacted performers about participating, according to artists involved in the festival.
The result was a festival that could eventually become an annual institution rather than a one-time celebrity event.
And after raising $20 million on her first attempt, Rodrigo has given herself an enormous problem for year two:
